Apostle John
It wasn't until I was in my late 40s that I finished reading Les Miserables, which is an immortal masterpiece in literature. I remember being deeply moved while reading the book because the process of sanctification of Jean Valjean was well described. I came to think that the person who showed the process of sanctification well in the Bible was the Apostle John. I was able to find out my volatile personality in the apostle John, who was called the son of thunder, who had a radical personality. The first image that came to my mind for the process of John’s sanctification was that Jesus looked at John with loving affection. As I looked back after meeting the Lord, I realized that if there were any important changes for good, none of them started with me. Only when the Lord looks at me and has compassion on me, my change is possible. I have heard an anecdote that when people who saw Michelangelo, an outstanding artist, asked how his marble sculpture was made, Michelangelo said, "I only find the man hiding inside the marble." I meditated on the starting point of my salvation as Jesus looked at my cold heart with His compassionate eyes and decided to melt my frozen heart with the warmth of love. Second, I thought that the Lord's incarnation, on top of the Lord's looking, changed John. When Rousseau wrote "Emile," a classic of pedagogy, I heard that Rousseau raised his child in the hands of others, rather than raising himself, I thought about how theoretically fictional his claims were. On the other hand, I thought about the love of the incarnation of the Lord, who came down to us to have compassion on us and to love us with tangible touches. Among the touches that came to John, the first thing that came to mind was that Jesus gave John the nickname “the son of thunder”. Perhaps he was saying that he should always remember his weakness, which is easy to get angry, and always seek the Lord's grace. Also, he taught the disciples, including John, who did not want to wash each other's feet by washing the disciples' feet himself. I remembered that there were brothers who believed in the Lord and treated me with love as if they washed my feet, and there were brothers who trusted me and allowed me to wash their feet. I meditated on what Jesus commanded us to take his yoke and learn from him while teaching the apostles including John. As the Lord's yoke is the yoke of the cross for other sinners, I could see that he meant that we would be changed in serving and loving the souls around us. Most of all, I remembered that Jesus showed true love by showing his sacrifice of carrying the cross and dying on the cross. For John the Apostle, who looked at the Lord hanging on the cross, the crucifixion must have been a shock like a great earthquake that shook his innate spirituality. Also, it seems that Jesus' special love for the Apostle John was the reason why he entrusted his physical mother Mary to him to comfort, serve, and love heartbroken Mary. Also, Jesus allowed John to see the brothers who were carrying the cross of their own. First of all, he made him witness the martyrdom of his brother James, and then other apostles, whom he had quarreled with in the past. I think that these experiences must have ignited John’s love for his brothers in his heart. Perhaps the life of John, who survived to the end and watched the martyrdom of all his brothers, was the biggest cross he had to bear. Finally, after his resurrection, the Lord, along with Peter, commanded him to feed his sheep. As I watched my wife who gave birth to and raised two children, I realized that becoming a mother is not by majoring in child education. By giving birth to a child in pain, experiencing many sleepless nights and learning sacrifices of love, a woman becomes a mother. John's epistles are called “epistles of love”, and I wondered if it was because in these epistles, the sad admonitions of love that he wanted to convey to the people of the church were well expressed. I imagined that John recollected himself in his early age, when he was still immature, while writing these letters and wanted to admonish them with love as Jesus did to him.
As I was organizing my thoughts, I thought of the teaching that love is what remains when everything disappears and is destroyed. It is said that life is to come empty-handed and go empty-handed, but I meditated that I can still carry the evidence of loving souls. I was moved by the Lord who loves us so much that He wants us to love each other and to use us as an instrument of His love.
John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
우뢰의 아들
40대 후반이 되어서야 불후의 명작으로 불리는 레미제라블을 읽게 되었습니다. 장발장의 성화 과정이 잘 묘사되어 있었기에 책을 읽으면서 감동을 크게 받았던 기억이 납니다. 성경에서 이와 같이 성화의 과정을 잘 보여준 인물이 사도 요한이라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 우뢰의 아들 보아너게로 불리웠던 과격한 성격의 소유자, 사도 요한에게서 저의 모난 성격의 모습을 찾아 볼 수 있기에 요한이 사랑의 사도로 바뀌워지는 과정과 그 이유들을 관찰하며 생각하게 되었습니다. 첫 번째로 제게 생각되어진 것은 예수님이 요한을 바라보신 그 눈길이었습니다. 주님 만나고 돌아 보니 제게 중요한 선한 변화들이 있다면 어느 것 하나 제게서 시작된 것이 없다는 생각이 들었습니다. 오직 주님이 저를 불쌍히 여기셔서 바라보심으로 그제서야 저의 변화가 가능해지는 것임을 묵상해 보았습니다. 뛰어난 예술가였던 미켈란젤로의 조각을 본 사람들이 그 제작 과정을 물었을 때 미켈란젤로는 “나는 대리석 속에 있는 사람을 찾아낼 뿐이다” 라고 말했다는 일화를 들은 적이 있습니다. 예수님께서 궁휼의 눈으로 사랑에 대해서는 얼어버린 저의 심령을 바라 보셔서 사랑의 온기로 저의 심령의 얼어 붙음을 녹이시려고 작정하심이 제 구원의 시작점이었음을 묵상해 보았습니다. 두 번째는 주님의 바라보심에 이어 주님이 임하심이 요한을 변화 시켰다고 생각 되었습니다. 교육학의 고전이라고 불리는 "에밀"을 루소가 집필하면서 루소가 자기 자식을 자신이 키우지 않고 다른 사람들의 손에 맡겨 키웠다는 이야기를 들었을 때 그의 주장이 얼마나 이론에 근거한 허구인 것을 생각한 적이 있었습니다. 이와는 달리 우리를 불쌍히 여기셔서, 만져지는 손길로 사랑하시고자 저희 곁으로 낮아져서 오신 주님의 성육신의 사랑을 생각해 보았습니다. 요한에게 임한 손길중 먼저 예수님께서 요한에게 우뢰의 아들 보아너게라는 별명을 주신 것이 떠올랐습니다. 아마도 쉽게 화내기 쉬운 자신의 약한 모습을 늘 기억하고 항상 주님의 은혜를 구하며 살 것을 말씀하신 것이 아닌가 합니다. 또한 요한에게 직접 제자들의 발을 씻기시는 모습을 보이시며 서로의 발을 씻기 원하지 않았던 제자들을 가르치신 것이 아닌가 합니다. 주님 믿고 제게도 저의 발을 씻기듯 사랑으로 대해준 형제들이 있었고 또한 저를 믿고 발을 씻도록 내어준 형제들이 있었던 것을 상기해 보게 되었습니다. 주님께서 사도 요한을 가르치시면서 주님의 멍에를 메고 주님께 배우라고 명령하셨던 것이 묵상 되었습니다. 주님의 멍에가 죄인들을 위하여 십자가 지시는 멍에이기에 주변의 영혼들을 섬기며 사랑하는 속에서 요한의 인성이 변화 될 것을 뜻하셨음을 알 수 있었습니다. 무엇보다도 주님이 십자가를 지시고 십자가에서 돌아가시는 모습을 사도 요한에게 보이셔서 참 사랑을 보이셨던 것이 떠올랐습니다. 십자가에 매달리신 주님을 바라보았던 사도 요한에게는 십자가 사건이 그의 타고난 인성을 뒤흔들 만한 큰 지진과 같은 충격이었을 것입니다. 또한 자신의 육신의 어머니 마리아를 그에게 맡기셔서 상심할 마리아를 위로하며 섬기며 사랑하도록 하신 데에도 사도 요한을 향한 예수님의 특별한 사랑의 배려가 계셨던 것이 아닌가 합니다. 또한 요한에게 십자가 지는 형제들을 보게 하셨음이 크게 다가왔습니다. 먼저 형제였던 야고보의 순교를 목격하게 하셨고 과거에 함께 다투기도 하였던 다른 사도들이 자신들의 십자가를 지며 순교하는 모습을 지켜 목격하게 하셔서 요한의 마음 속에 형제들에 대한 사랑의 마음을 불 일듯 일어나게 하셨을 것이라 생각되었습니다. 아마도 끝까지 살아 남아 모든 형제들의 순교를 지켜 보았던 요한의 삶이 그가 져야 했던 가장 큰 십자가 아닌가 생각해 보았습니다. 마지막으로 부활하신 후 주님께서 베드로와 함께 그에게 자신의 양을 먹일 것을 명령하셨습니다. 두 아이를 낳고 키우는 아내를 보면서 어머니가 되는 것은 아동 교육학을 전공한 아가씨가 아니라는 생각을 하였습니다. 아이를 고통 속에서 낳고, 잠 못 자는 많은 날들과 사랑의 희생들을 배움 으로서 그제야 어머니가 됨을 묵상해 보았습니다. 요한의 서신들을 사랑의 서신이라고 하는데 아마도 이 서신들 속에서 자신의 미숙했던 과거의 모습 속에 머물러 있는 교회의 사람들을 보면서 그들에게 전하기 원했던 안타까운 사랑의 훈계들이 잘 나타나 있기 때문이 아닌가 생각해 볼 수 있었습니다.
생각들을 정리하면서 모든 것이 다 사라지고 폐하여 질 때도 남는 것이 사랑이라는 가르침을 떠올려 보았습니다. 빈 손으로 왔다가 빈 손으로 가는 것이 인생이라고 하지만 영혼들을 사랑한 증거만은 들 고 갈 수 있을 것임을 묵상해 보았습니다. 우리를 사랑하시기에 서로를 사랑하게 하시며 주님의 사랑의 도구로 사용하기 원하시는 주님에 감동 됨으로 사랑의 모습을 향해 조금은 변화되는 하루가 되기를 소망하며 묵상해 보았습니다.
