Bong-Gyoon Han

There are many bluebirds in my state. It is very easy to find a bluebird in the forest. I was delighted at my first encounter with a bluebird at California. As time passed in my busy life as a doctorate student, I had fewer sightings of the bluebird and it faded from my mind. Recently, I had a chance to see a picture of the bluebird from my home country Korea and discovered that there are bluebirds in Korea too.

 

I recalled the bluebird story from my childhood.  Two children took a lengthy journey to find the bluebird (the symbol of happiness) and finally found it near their own home. This story is easy to sympathize and provides a wisdom about the nature of happiness. I thought about how happiness happened in my life. There was a strong correlation between my happiness and gratitude.  The moments when I appreciated the blessing given to me were also moments of trials. During difficult times, I examined my life more carefully and discovered many blessings that I overlooked before. The prerequisite of happiness was not the improvement of the condition but greater awareness of what I already had.

 

It is tricky to define what happiness is. When my son was five to six years old, as a joke I asked him the meaning of happiness. He answered “Happiness is to live with family with good relationships.” and surprised me by this sage answer. I have not found any better definitions since then. I find my happiness through the relationships with loving people. The commandment of Jesus, “Love each other” contains the secret to happiness. If the secret to happiness in this world is in loving people around us, the secret of everlasting happiness would be in loving Jesus in this world and in living with Him in loving relationship. I hope to love and serve people around me and Jesus, and find more bluebirds in heaven and earth.

제가 사는 켈리포니아 주변에는 파랑새가 참 많습니다. 조금만 숲속으로 들어가 봐도 흔하게 파랑새를 볼 수 있습니다. 한국에서는 파랑새를 보지 못하였기에, 미국에 유학와서 처음 파랑새를 보았을 때 파랑새가 신기하게 느껴졌던 기억이 납니다. 하지만 시간이 지나면서 바쁜 유학 생활 속에서 점점 파랑새가 제 눈에서, 그리고 더 나아가 제 마음 속에서 사라져버린 것 같습니다. 최근에 한국에 계신 분의 새 사진을 보다가 한국에도 예쁜 파랑새가 있는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 아마 조금씩 모양은 달라도 어느 곳에나 파랑새가 있는가 봅니다.

 

어린 시절 읽었던 동화 속의 파랑새가 생각납니다. 여기 저기 행복을 상징하는 파랑새를 찾아 다니다가 어디서도 발견하지 못했던 파랑새를 막상 자기 집에서 발견하였던 이야기 속에 우리 모두가 공감하는 행복의 모습이 있는 듯합니다. 이 파랑새의 이야기와 관련하여 제 삶 속에서 행복은 어떤 모양으로 다가오는 지를 생각해 볼 기회가 있었습니다.  제게는 행복과 제 삶에 대한 감사가 뗄레야 뗄 수 없는 관계에 있는 것 같습니다. 제 삶에 주어진 행복과 축복을 돌아보며 감사하게 되는 순간은 주로 어려움과 시련이 갑자기 닥쳤을 때가 아닌가 합니다. 어려움이 닥쳐서 돌아보게 되면 평소에는 무심히 스쳐 지나갔던 일들 속에 많은 축복과 행복들이 스며 있음을 보게 되곤 합니다. 범사에 감사하라는 성경의 말씀 속에 감사와 행복에 대한 많은 지혜가 들어 있다 하겠습니다. 행복을 느끼며 발견하게 되는 것은 환경의 개선 보다는 이미 존재하고 있는 주어진 행복을 보는 눈이 열릴 때라는 생각이 듭니다.

 

행복이 무엇인지 정의하기도 쉽지 않은 것 같습니다. 제 아들이 5~6 세 되던 때에 장난으로 행복이 무엇인지를 아들 애에게 물어본  적이 있었습니다. 아들애가 “가족과 함께 사이좋게 사는 것이 행복이에요” 라고 대답하였는데 생각지 않은 지혜로운 대답에 놀랐던 기억이 납니다. 그 이후에도 이보다 행복을 더 잘 설명한 말을 아직 듣지 못했습니다. 사랑하는 사람과의 관계 속에서 저는 행복을 발견하게 되는 것이 아닌가 합니다. 서로 사랑하라 하신 예수님의 말씀 속에 행복을 향한 비밀이 숨어 있음을 생각하게 됩니다.  이 땅에 사는 동안 주변의 사람들을 서로 사랑하며 사는 삶 속에 이 땅에서의 행복에 대한 비밀이 있다면, 제가 예수님을 사랑하며 살다가 주님이 마련하신 천국에서 주님과 영원히 사랑하며 사는 약속 속에 영원한 행복의 비밀이 숨어있다는 생각이 드네요. 시간을 아껴 주변의 사람들과 예수님을 사랑하며 섬기며 살다가 많은 파랑새들을 목격하게 될 것을 기대해 봅니다.
