Chubby Sparrow
One afternoon, I felt moody and drove two hours to an ocean cliff famous for its wild flowers. It was a late afternoon and there was only a couple of people around. I wanted to take photos of wild flowers but could not find any flower that caught my interest. When I was about to leave, I noticed a common sparrow hopping and picking seeds among the wild flowers. I thought that the sparrow was different from other birds because it did not care about me, instead focused on its own business. The sparrow and me was just within arm’s reach and I felt amused by the sparrow and stopped to observe it. I carefully took a picture of this amusing bird with its careless attitude. While I was focusing the camera lens on the sparrow, I noticed how chubby and cute the bird was. Probably, the carefree attitude of the sparrow was the reason for its chubbiness. My mind was refreshed due to this sparrow and, on the way to home, I thought about why this sparrow could make me a little happier. I meditated that this sparrow did not fear its surrounding and had the wisdom of enjoying the given moment of eating its daily food. I thought that the carefree attitude of this sparrow, enjoying the moment, gave me a valuable lesson. Many of the reasons that made me unhappy were worries about the future and regrets about the past. If I could trust more in the provision and care of the Lord, I could be free from many of the reasons that made me unhappy. I thought about why Jesus gave several teachings about birds. The reason could be that He wanted to remind us of His words and promises through common objects found in our daily lives. Because I needed the wisdom of this sparrow of enjoying the provision of God with neither storehouse nor barn, I printed the picture of this sparrow and kept in my Bible.
Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
통통하게 살찐 참새를 보고
마음이 울적하던 어느 날 오후에 두 시간 넘게 운전을 해서 해변가 절벽 위에 위치한 야생화가 많은 장소를 찾았습니다. 늦은 오후에 도착하였기에 사람이 평소에 많이 찾는 넓은 장소임에도 인적이 없었습니다. 사진기를 들고 야생화를 찍으려 하였지만 눈길을 끄는 꽃도 없어 한 두시간 만에 어스름해지기 시작한 그 곳을 뒤로 하고 떠나려 하였습니다. 이 때에 눈 앞에서 평범한 참새 한 마리가 통통거리며 야생화들 가운데서 씨앗들을 쪼아먹고 있었습니다. 특이했던 것은 이 참새가 제가 바로 옆에 있는 것을 개의치 않고 먹이를 먹고 있는 모습이었습니다. 손을 길게 뻗으면 잡힐 듯한 가까운 거리였기에 신기해서 자리에 멈춰 서서 이 참새의 움직임을 지켜 보았습니다. 그 참새의 걱정이 없는 듯한 모습이 우스워서 조심스럽게 이 참새의 모습을 사진에 담았습니다. 카메라로 촛점을 맞추다 보니 이 참새가 유난히 살이 통통한 것이 귀여워 보였습니다. 아마도 주변에 대한 걱정 없이 사는 이 참새였기에 다른 참새들보다 살이 더 통통한 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다. 이 참새로 인해 마음이 유쾌해졌기에 돌아오는 길에 이 참새에 대해 생각해 보게 되었습니다. 왜 내 마음이 울적했었고 왜 이 작은 새 한마리는 나를 유쾌하게 할 만큼 여유있는 모습인지를 생각해 보았습니다. 이 참새에게는 주변에 있는 것들을 두려워하지 아니하고 그 주어진 순간에 주어진 양식을 열심히 취하는 지혜가 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 나를 울적하게 하는 많은 이유들이 미래에 대한 근심과 과거에 대한 후회로 부터 온 것들이기에 주어진 순간을 만족하며 사는 지혜가 때로는 귀하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 주님의 공급하심과 돌보심을 더 믿고 의지할 수 있다면 저를 우울하게 만드는 많은 것들로부터 자유로울 것입니다. 주님께서 새의 비유를 들어 근심하지 말라 하신 이유를 생각해 봅니다. 제 주위에 늘 보이는 것들을 통해 주님의 말씀과 약속을 잊을 때마다 늘 상기시키기 위해서일 것입니다. 이 참새처럼 양식 창고가 없어도 늘 채워주시는 주님의 공급하심을 누리는 지혜가 제게도 필요한 듯하여 이 참새 사진을 인쇄해서 한참 동안 성경 갈피 속에 넣고 다녔던 기억이 납니다.
