Cloud Reversed
Several years ago, I had a chance to drive through the state of Arizona and happened to find a small national park that was not known well. It was a place with a humble entrance, didn’t even have a park office and only had a name post telling the name of the park as “Petrified Wood National Park”. It was a very hot summer season and unpleasant to drive through the Arizona desert. However, I started to notice the unique beauty of the area and realized that I found a very beautiful place. After I looked around the area, I drove out of the park and observed a very interesting weather phenomenon. The arid desert area, which had dried up completely by the drought season that had spanned over several months, started to be filled with a thick, black cloud forming over the horizon in a very short span of time. Even though I had heard before that desert weather could change suddenly, the change of the weather was so much more dramatic than I had imagined. It was a very special experience and I felt the blowing of the humid air from the desert area, that was quite dry just a moment ago. After careful observation, I started to realize that the big black cloud was not formed in the heavens above but instead in the desert below. It was the cloud reversed phenomenon, in which the black cloud column was formed on the earth, sucking the humidity from the dry land and taking that humidity to the sky. It was a rare moment to observe an interesting weather phenomenon especially for a city dweller like me. The scenery was quite grand but the black cloud column was even more grand. Because of time constraints, I had to leave and felt sorry that I could not take a picture of the lightning which happened many times within the black column of humid air.
In retrospect now, I feel that the arid desert and the cloud reversed reflected the current world. It seemed to me that the spirit of our generation was like an arid desert created by Covid, the resulting economic burden, and the disconnection of human contact. However, the cloud column in the desert gave me hope. As each air molecule gathered from the arid desert to form a huge column of cloud, our prayers for the ease of the era of pain and difficulty, could gather to form a column of prayers to shake the Heaven above. In a hope to bring that moment a little sooner, I decided to kneel down to pray to God to add a single prayer to reach to the Heaven above.

역전된 구름 기둥
수년 전 미국 아리조나 주를 지나 가던 중, 미국 사람들에게 조차도 잘 알려지지 않은 한 작은 국립 공원을 우연히 알게 되었습니다. 입구에 잘 정비된 안내소도 없는 허술한 입구를 지닌 곳이었는데 Petrified Wood (석화 나무) 국립 공원이라는 이름이 적혀 있었습니다. 무척 더운 여름날 이었기에 그늘도 전혀 없는 아리조나 사막을 운전하기가 상쾌하지는 않았지만 다른 곳에서는 볼 수 없는 그 지형의 특이한 풍경이 눈에 들어 오면서 아주 아름다운 곳임을 알게 되어 기뻤습니다. 즐거운 마음으로 몇 시간 둘러본 뒤 국립 공원을 빠져 나오면서 신기한 광경을 목격하였습니다. 몇 달의 가뭄으로 인해 공기에서 조금의 습기도 느껴지지 않던 타듯이 말라버린 사막에서 검은 구름 기둥이 멀리서 갑자기 형성되는 것이 보이기 시작한 것이었습니다. 사막의 기후가 갑자기 변할 수 있다는 말을 듣기는 했지만 정말로 빠른 변화였기에 놀라왔습니다. 갑자기 메마랐던 사막에 수증기의 냄새가 몰아 닥치기 시작하는 신기한 경험이었습니다. 그런데 더 놀라왔던 것은 주의 깊게 살펴보니 큰 구름 기등이 하늘 위에서부터 생긴 것이 아니라 땅 밑에서부터 형성된 검은 수증기의 기둥이 그 메마른 땅으로 부터 수증기를 빨아 올려 하늘에 짙은 구름을 이루기 시작하는 신기한 역전된 자연 현상이었습니다. 도시에서 사는 저에게는 평생에 한 번 보기 힘든 장관이었습니다. 지형도 아름다왔지만 오히려 땅에서 부터 하늘로 올라가는 구름 기둥이 더욱 인상적이었습니다. 빨리 자리를 떠야 했기에 아쉽게도 검은 수증기 기둥 속에서 여러 번 치던 번개를 사진에 담지 못해 서운했던 기억이 납니다.
지금에 와서 생각해 보니 이 메마른 사막과 구름 기둥이 이 시대를 반영하고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 코로나로, 경제의 어려움으로, 사람들과의 더 심해진 단절로 상해버린 우리들의 심령이 마르고 말라 버린 사막과 같다는 생각이 들었습니다. 하지만 제가 본 사막의 구름 기둥은 저에게 소망을 주었습니다. 그 메마른 땅에서 수증기 하나가 모여 하늘에 닿는 거대한 구름 기둥을 이루듯 우리들이 고통 속에서 하나님을 향해 외친 간구의 기도들이 모이고 모여 하늘을 진동하는 역사를 이루어 내는 놀라운 일이 있을 수 있음을 생각했기 때문입니다. 그 때가 속히 오기를 고대하며 오늘 저 먼저 땅에서부터 시작되어 하나님께 상달 될 수증기 한 방울을 더하도록 무릎 꿇어 주님께 기도하는 하루가 되기를 소망해 보았습니다.
