Courage To Jump
These days, I'm interested in birds and am running around to take bird pictures. I waited for the eagle to appear from early in the morning on the shore of the lake that someone said that the eagle was catching fish, but it was in vain. While looking at the lake with disappointment, I started to notice the water birds floating on the water. Observing them over time made me think it was fascinating to see the water birds jumping into the water to catch their prey. Flying birds are the most sought-after photos of bird photographers, but I could see that there was another beauty in seeing the water birds jumping into the water to dive.
I thought that there was something to be learned from the way the water bird jumped into the water without hesitation when he saw his prey. It is about the courage of faith. Birds are originally designed to fly, but they leap into the medium of water that may not be familiar to them. I came to meditate on the courage to take risks. Especially when I thought about the moment when a bird, born out of water, jumped into the water for the first time, I realized that it must have been a difficult choice. It must have taken great courage and faith to take a leap toward a world that had never been experienced before.
It made me think that I too had this experience. When I was studying for my PhD in biophysics program at UC Berkeley, I was encouraged by many people to believe in Jesus. However, it was not an easy choice for me to enter the invisible spirit world because of my training as a scientist to believe only tangible and confirmed things. Over four years, I argued a lot against Christians. But like a water bird that sees a faint prey in the water and takes courage to jump into the water, I seem to start to hear the voice of Jesus, even faintly, calling me. I was faintly feeling the hand of the God in the miraculous beauty that exists in all things in nature, in the agitation in my heart at the invitation of Jesus who was inviting me through many people, in my hope for the hand of the Absolute in my weakness, and in mystical experience. Even though it was difficult, I could summon the courage to pray to the God. Just like a water bird that jumped into the water with courage and found something to eat, there was a moment when I immediately gained faith and gained the bread of life after praying to Jesus. Now that I think about it, even though Jesus called me through many evidences around me, I put it off to answer for His calling for a long time.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
뛰어드는 용기
요즈음 새에 흥미를 갖고 새 사진을 찍기 위해 열심히 돌아 다니고 있습니다. 누군가의 말을 듣고 독수리가 물고기를 잡는다는 호숫가에서 아침 일찍부터 독수리가 나타나기 만을 기다렸지만 허탕이었습니다. 아쉬운 마음으로 호수를 바라보다가 물 위에 떠 있는 물 새들을 눈 여겨 보게 되었습니다. 시간을 두고 관찰하니 물 새들이 먹이를 잡기 위해 열심히 물 속으로 뛰어드는 모습도 매력적 임을 생각하게 되었습니다. 새 사진을 찍는 사람들이 주로 찍기 원하는 사진이 새가 나는 모습이지만 물 새들이 물 속으로 잠수하기 위해 뛰어드는 모습에도 또 다른 아름다움이 있음을 알 수 있었습니다.
물 위에서 물 밑을 유심히 바라보다가 먹잇감을 보게 되면 서슴 없이 물 속으로 뛰어드는 모습 속에서 배울 점이 있음을 생각하게 되었습니다. 바로 믿음의 용기에 관한 것입니다. 새라고 하는 것이 본래는 하늘을 날도록 만들어진 것인데 익숙하지 않을 수 도 있는 물이라는 매체를 향해 뛰어드는 모습 속에서 위험을 무릅쓰고 먹이를 향해 뛰어드는 용기가 있음을 묵상하게 되었습니다. 특별히 새가 물 밖에서 태어나서 처음으로 물 속을 향해 뛰어드는 순간을 떠 올려 보니 쉽지 않은 선택 이었을 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 한번도 경험해 본 적이 없는 세계를 향한 도약을 하기 위해서는 큰 용기와 믿음이 필요하였을 것입니다.
제게도 이러한 경험이 있었다는 생각도 하게 되었습니다. 미국 U.C. Berkeley 대학에서 생물리학 박사 과정을 공부하던 시절에 여러 사람들로부터 예수님을 믿어 보라는 권고를 받았던 기억이 납니다. 만져지고 확증 된 것만을 믿도록 과학자로 훈련된 저에게 보이지 않는 영의 세계로 들어서는 선택은 쉽지 않았던 것이었기에 4 년 동안 저에게 예수님을 전하던 사람들과 많은 논쟁을 벌였습니다. 하지만 물 속에서 희미하게 보이는 먹이감을 보고 용기를 내어 물 속으로 뛰어드는 물새 처럼, 저도 희미하게나마 저를 부르시는 예수님의 음성을 알고 있었던 것 같습니다. 자연 만물 속에서 존재하는 신기한 아름다움 속에서 창조주의 손길을 어렴풋이나마 느끼고 있었고, 여러 사람을 통해 초청하시는 예수님의 초청 속에서 마음에 동요가 있었으며, 내 연약함 속에서 절대자의 손길을 원했고, 신비한 경험 속에서 주님의 부르심이 있음을 느낄 수 있었기에 어렵지만 용기를 내어 창조주에게 기도를 하게 되었습니다. 용기를 내어 물 속에 뛰어든 물 새가 먹을 것을 발견하듯, 저도 예수님을 향한 기도를 하고 나서 바로 믿음을 얻고 생명의 양식을 얻게 되는 순간이 있었습니다. 지금 생각해보니 주변 많은 증거들을 통해 예수님이 부르셨음에도 용기가 없어 오랜 시절을 미루다가 늦게나마 예수님을 믿게 되었던 듯 합니다.
