Cucumber Kimchi
Once I dreamed a random dream about Korean cucumber kimchi and, while still dreaming, thought to share the cucumber kimchi with my Bible study group. After I woke up, I meditated that there were some parallels between the cucumber kimchi and the hand of God on our lives. The first step in making cucumber kimchi was to cut the cucumber in the shape of cross to make room for seasoning. This shape reminded me of the cross left on our spirits by God at the time of our salvation. I was reminded of the cross mark cut into our souls by His hand. The next step in making cucumber kimchi is to salt the cucumber to soften the texture to optimize the seasoning. This step reminded me the touch of God which humbled us to mold our self-reliant characters into God-depending ones. The next step of stuffing seasoning into the softened cucumber reminded me of the grace and the love entering our lives. I saw the parallel because God’s hand transformed our selfish lives into loving, caring ones and filled our lives with the precious fruits of experiencing God and loving others. As a last step, I remembered how the maturation of the cucumber kimchi over time to bring out its flavors. This maturation step reminded me our aging and maturation within the love of God. Even though we cannot stay young forever, it is possible to have rich spiritual fruits at any stage of life. After I shared this thought in my Bible study group, a sister in the group made the cucumber kimchi the next day and brought it to my home. Due to this act of love, there were many thanks and joyful conversations. This was a moment of filling the cucumber kimchi of life with the seasoning of the love for each other.
Matthew 5:13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
오이 소배기
느닷없이 오이 소배기에 관한 꿈을 꾸고 오이 소배기에 관한 생각을 하게 된 날이 있었습니다. 그러던 중 오이 소배기와 우리를 만지시는 하나님의 손길과의 유사한 점들이 떠올라 목장 식구들과 이야기를 나누었습니다. 먼저 오이 소배기를 만들 때에 칼로 버무린 양념을 넣을 칼집을 십자 모양으로 내는 것이 마치 우리가 주님을 만날 때에 우리 심령에 새겨 넣는 십자가의 형상과 유사하였습니다. 우리 심령에 십자가의 흔적을 남기신 주님의 손길을 연상해 보았습니다. 다음으로 오이의 숨을 죽이기 위해 소금물로 두르는 것이 주님께서 때로는 어려움과 시련으로 우리를 겸손케 하시는 손길과 유사하게 생각 되었습니다. 우리들의 연약함을 깨닫게 하셔서 혈기 많은 우리들을 주님만을 의지하도록 만드시는 주님의 손길과 유사함을 연상해 보았습니다. 또한 숨이 죽은 오이 속에 양념을 버무려서 넣는 것이 우리 인생 가운데 채워지는 은혜와 사랑의 열매들과 유사함을 생각해 보았습니다. 자신 밖에 모르던 우리들이 주님을 경험하며 서로를 사랑함으로 우리 인생에 채우는 값진 열매들이 오이 소배기 속의 맛갈난 양념들과 유사함이 떠올랐습니다. 마지막으로 익어가는 오이 소배기의 변화되는 맛들도 우리의 변화와 유사한 점이 있음을 생각해 보았습니다. 나이를 먹어가며 젊은 시절과는 다른 모습으로 주님을 경험하며 형제 자매들을 섬기는 우리의 모습이 익어가며 어느 때에 내어놓아도 먹음직한 오이 소배기의 맛들을 연상케 하였습니다. 마냥 젊을 수는 없는 것이 인생이지만 주님 안에서이기에 어느 때에 내어 놓아도 풍족할 수 있는 영성을 지닐 수 있음을 묵상하였습니다. 이러한 내용을 모임에서 나눈 다음 날 목장의 한 자매님이 일부러 오이 소배기를 직접 담그셔서 저희 집에 전해 주셨습니다. 주님 안에서의 섬김으로 인해 훈훈한 감사와 덕담들이 오고 갔습니다. 주님 안에서 서로를 사랑하기에 서로가 서로에게 오이 소배기 속의 사랑의 양념이 되는 순간이었습니다.
