Desert Rain
I set out on a trip to the Arizona desert with my friend in early August, the hottest time of the year, just in time for the hummingbirds to come to Arizona from South America. This was the peak of the monsoon climate with heavy rains in the Arizona desert region. As outsiders, we arrived at Saguaro Cactus National Park in Arizona without knowing the severity of the heavy rains during this time of year. I would like to summarize two stories that happened at that time.
When we arrived at Saguaro Cactus National Park, I realized that it was a more beautiful place than I expected. According to my usual experience and knowledge of the desert, the desert was a desolate and rough place, but this place was as green as a forest full of green trees. Red or yellow cactus flowers were in full bloom, emitting abundant life force. There were also many different birds chirping and it was a fun sight to see a desert tortoise, that I had long wanted to see, slowly passing before the car. I was able to feel the vitality of this desert more abundant than the vitality I felt in the forests of other regions. During the week-long trip, I witnessed various plants, birds, and wild beasts and observed more diverse animals than other places. I wondered what was the reason for this vitality, but after a while I found out that the reason was the heavy rain. While exploring this place, I witnessed that the sunny day suddenly turned into a stormy day. Dark, and huge, dark black clouds with the mountains in the background soared suddenly from the ground into the sky. Around this time, there was a warning on the phone that heavy rain was coming. However, not knowing the severity of the torrential rain, I and my friend did not take the warnings we received on the phone very seriously. Rather, we took the time to enjoy the scenery and had a brief dinner. Just as we were about to leave the area, we witnessed lightning strikes in the midst of a huge pillar of black cloud. we stayed in the area for a while longer to take pictures of lightning and missed the last chance to safely evacuate the area by a little bit of time. Just as driving out of the area, we experienced a torrential downpour that I had never seen in my life. The lightning was drawing nearer, and it was raining so heavily that we couldn't literally see an inch ahead and couldn't drive on the mountain road. However, the water was rising at such a rapid rate that the car was about to be flooded, so we had to rush out of the area at a risk. We were compelled to drive the car slower than a person's walking speed as if groping carefully. Because I sensed the danger of life, I had no choice but to pray earnestly to the God who controls life. After a lot of hard work, we were fortunate enough to have managed to get out of the heavy rain hazard area, and then I was able to clear my heart and calm my mind. It was the first time I had experienced what it was like to have heavy rain from the mountains during the monsoon season.
This experience made me think of two things, first about warnings. There may be some warning signs ahead of a period of great peril in our lives. I had experienced serious consequences of the folly of ignoring the dark clouds and thunder that preceded the great storm and losing the opportunity to evacuate. It was an opportunity for me to learn the wisdom of watching my life and times with sensitivity so that I do not suffer great things. I should not be insensitive to the warnings that God gives me before judging my personal life or this age.
The second thought was about the heavy rains that gave the desert a bountiful life. The rain revived the dried cactus and seeds that had been waiting for the rain to germinate when there was abundant heavy rain in the desert. Animals who were thirsty flock to the oasis formed by the abundant rain, so the oasis was overflowing with more diverse animals than anywhere else. It made me think that this is similar to the abundant life that occurs when the grace of Jesus comes to a life that is thirsty and weary in the world. I thought that it is the same as the joyful moment when a person, who has lived a difficult life, is saved, and the people around him gather to see the new joy. It was also an opportunity for me to rededicate myself to the grace of the Lord to witness His grace to others.

사막에 비가 오면
벌새가 남미 지역에서 아리조나로 올라오는 최적 시기에 맞춰 가장 더운 시기인 8월 초에 아리조나 사막 여행을 떠나게 되었습니다. 마침 이 시기가 아리조나 사막 지역에 큰 비가 내리는 몬순 기후의 절정기였는데, 외지인으로서 이 시기에 내리는 폭우의 심각성을 알지 못한 채 아리조나에 있는 수와로 선인장 국립공원에 도착하였습니다. 그 때 겪은 두가지 이야기를 정리해 두려고 합니다.
수와로 선인장 국립 공원에 도착해 보니 생각보다 아름다운 곳임을 알게 되었습니다. 제가 평소에 지녔던 사막에 대한 경험과 지식에 따르면 사막은 황량하고 거친 곳이었는데 이 곳은 그 어떤 푸른 나무들로 가득 찬 숲 못지 않게 푸르른 수와로 선인장들이 10 미터 이상되는 키를 자랑하며 빼곡하게 차 있었습니다. 빨갛고 혹은 노란 선인장들 꽃들이 만발하여 풍성한 생명력을 내뿜고 있었습니다. 또한 여러 다양한 새 소리들이 들려오고 있었고, 오랫동안 보기를 원했던 사막 거북이가 차 앞을 느릿 느릿 지나가는 재미있는 광경을 목격할 수 있었습니다. 이 사막이 지닌 생명력이 오히려 다른 지역의 숲에서 느낀 생명력보다 더 풍성함을 느낄 수 있었고, 일주일간의 여행동안 여러 식물들과, 새들과, 들 짐승들을 목격하며 다른 곳 보다 더 다양한 동물들을 사막에서 관찰할 수 있었습니다. 이러한 생명력의 이유가 무엇인지 의아해 하다가 잠시후 내린 폭우에 그 이유가 있음을 알게 되었습니다. 이 곳을 둘러보던 중 화창하던 날씨가 갑자기 어두워지며 땅에서 부터 하늘로 치솟는 거대하고 짙은 검은색 구름이 산을 배경으로 갑자기 형성되는 것을 목격하였습니다. 이 때 쯤 전화기에 폭우가 올 것이라는 경보가 있었습니다. 하지만 폭우의 심각성을 알지 못해 전화로 받은 경고를 대수롭게 여기지 않으며 오히려 시원해 지는 날씨에 맞춰 피크닠을 하며 경치를 즐기는 여유를 누렸습니다. 피크닠을 정리하고 막 지역을 떠나려 하다가 마침 검은 거대한 구름 기둥 속에서 번개가 계속 치는 것을 목격하였습니다. 번개 사진을 찍을 욕심으로 잠시 더 그 지역에 머물게 되면서 그 지역을 안전하게 대피할 마지막 시기를 약간의 시간 차이로 놓치고 말았습니다. 빗발이 거세어 지기에 차를 몰고 그 지역을 막 떠나는 시점에 평생 본적이 없는 엄청난 폭우가 퍼 부어지는 것을 경험하게 되었습니다. 번개가 점점 가까와지고 있었으며, 어찌나 비가 많이 오는지 문자 그대로 한 치 앞을 분간할 수 없어 산길 도로에서 운전을 할 수 없는 지경에 이르렀습니다. 하지만 물이 엄청난 속도로 불어나 차가 곧 침수될 지경 이었기에 위험을 무릅쓰고 그 지역을 급히 피해야만 했습니다. 할 수 없이 사람이 걷는 속도보다 느리게 차를 몰아, 조심 조심 더듬듯이 그 곳을 떠나야만 했습니다. 생명의 위험을 직감하였기에 생명을 주관하시는 하나님에게 간절한 기도가 절로 나올 수 밖에 없는 상황이었습니다. 천신 만고 끝에 참으로 다행히 폭우 위험 지역을 겨우 빠져 나와 서야 가슴을 쓸어 내리며 마음을 진정시킬 수 있었습니다. 몬순 시기에 산에서 내리는 폭우가 어떠한 것인지를 처음으로 경험한 위험한 상황이었습니다.
이 경험을 통해 두가지 생각을 하게 되었는데 먼저 경고에 대한 것입니다. 우리 인생에서 큰 위험의 시기에 앞서 어떠한 징조가 있을 수 있다는 것입니다. 큰 폭풍우 전에 있었던 먹구름과 천둥을 무시하고 지나쳐서 대피할 기회를 잃는 어리석음이 어떠한 결과를 초래하는 지를 크게 느꼈기 때문입니다. 더 나아가 하나님이 제 개인적 삶을 혹은 이 시대를 심판하시기 전에 주시는 경고에 둔감하여 큰 일을 당하는 일이 없도록 민감하게 제 삶과 시대를 돌아보는 지혜를 지녀야 함을 생각해 보는 기회가 되었습니다.
두 번 째는 사막의 풍성한 생명력을 부여하는 폭우에 관한 것입니다. 사막에 풍성한 폭우가 주어지면 비를 기다리던 씨앗들이 발아하고, 말랐던 선인장들이 소생하여 푸르른 오아시스가 형성됨을 묵상할 수 있었습니다. 주변에 물이 없어 갈증을 느끼던 동물들이 풍성한 비로 형성된 오아시스로 몰려들기에 오아시스에는 다른 곳보다 더 다양한 동물들로 넘치게 되는 것입니다. 이는 마치 세상에서 목마르고 지친 인생에게 예수님의 은혜가 임할 때 일어나는 풍성한 삶과 유사함을 생각하게 되었습니다. 어려운 삶을 살던 한 사람이 구원받으면 그로 인해 다른 주변의 사람들이 그 새로운 기쁨을 보고자 모여드는 현상과 동일하다는 생각을 하였습니다 . 이러한 생명력이 일어나도록 주님의 은혜로 나를 채우며 다른 이들에게 주님의 은혜를 전할 것을 다짐해보는 기회였습니다.
