Meditation about desert
California is a state with many deserts. During my childhood in Korea, which has no desert, I used to imagine the desert as a place filled with sand. However, after I had toured various desert areas in California, my impression of the desert changed. The Californian desert was a place which was barren and harsh, filled with many rocks. Most of the bushes of the desert were filled with sharp thorns, and I had to be careful not to get a scratch. Even many of the insects seemed to have sting, and I had to stay away from them. Even though my hiking trail was limited to several miles, the most important thing to carry was a water bottle. My thoughts at the desert were filled with the desire for shady areas to hide from the sunlight and water to drink. Because my water bottle only held enough water to sustain me for several hours, I needed to know where to refill my water bottle before beginning the hike. For the desert is a place without a trail or sign post, I could easily become lost without a detailed map and compass.
The desert described in the Bible is a place with serpents and scorpions. It might be more like a harsh Californian desert. I meditate that if I live my life without a grace from God, my life would become like a thorny bush or stinging insect. If my life is analogized to a desert, refilling my spiritual water bottle means to remember my first encounter with Jesus, and other important spiritual moments. If I do not have a spiritual compass, the word of God, I would become a castaway, wondering in the desert until I die of thirst. By fixing my eyes on Jesus and holding on to the evidence of His grace, I would not be far from reaching my home in heaven.
Exodus 13:21. And the Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light so that they might travel by day and by night.
사막에서의 묵상
켈리포니아는 사막이 많은 곳입니다. 과거에 사막이 없던 한국에서 살던 시절 저는 사막을 모래로 가득찬 곳으로만 여겼습니다. 하지만 켈리포니아에 여러 사막들을 여행하면서 사막의 다른 모습들을 보게되었습니다. 켈리포니아 사막은 많은 돌들이 있고 척박하며 거친 광야였습니다. 광야에 있는 잡목들은 하나같이 가시가 있어서 조심하지 않으면 쉽게 다칠 수가 있었습니다. 그 곳에서 사는 벌레들도 유난히 쏘는 벌레들이 많아서 가능하면 만지지 않는 것이 안전했습니다. 몇 시간만 광야의 길을 걸었지만 광야를 걸어가며 가장 필요한 것은 물이었습니다. 광야에서의 저의 생각은 온통 더위를 피할 곳과 식수를 찾고자하는 생각으로 가득차 있었습니다. 제가 지녔던 물병으로는 사막의 더위 속에서 몇시간 이상을 버틸 수는 없었기에 다시 물을 채울 곳을 정확히 알아야 했습니다. 또한 사막은 길이 없고 이정표가 없는 곳이었기에 길을 잃기 쉽고 그러기에 어느 곳보다도 정확한 지도와 나침판이 필요한 곳이었습니다.
아마도 성경에서 말하는 불뱀과 전갈들이 있다고 하는 광야의 모습도 모래로 가득찬 사하라 사막의 모습보다는 거친 땅에 뜨거운 불볕이 작열하는 켈리포니아의 광야와 같은 환경이 아닌가 합니다. 우리 앞에 놓여진 광야와 같은 삶을 은혜없이 살아간다면 우리도 가시를 내는 잡목들, 혹은 쏘는 독충과 같은 모습을 지닐 수 있음을 생각해 보았습니다. 우리 인생길이 광야라면 아마도 제게는 주님을 처음 만났던 순간과 주님을 경험했던 믿음의 이정표된 몇 순간들을 기억함이 때때로 비워져 말라버리는듯한 나의 심령의 물병을 채우는 과정인것 같습니다. 광야 같은 인생에서 천국 본향을 향한 정확한 시선의 고정 없이 길을 가고 있다면 우리는 지도와 나침판 없이 황야를 헤매는 무모한 여행자일 것입니다. 주님을 향한 시선을 새로히 하며 주님이 주신 은혜의 증거들을 붙잡고 가다보면 광야를 지나 본향에 이를 때가 그리 멀지 않을 것임을 묵상해 보았습니다.
