Monarch Butterfly
On a winter day of 2020, during which all of us were confined to our homes due to the corona virus, our family visited Stata Cruz State Park near the Pacific Ocean to see many monarch butterflies spending winter together. We could see swarms of monarch butterflies on eucalyptus tree branches gathering in the numbers up to tens and hundreds. At these scenes, we talked about the wisdom of the monarch butterfly. Their behavior of spending the winter together, depending on each other, reminded us of our family life during the hard year of corona virus. We could sympathize with them. According to the explanation on the park information board, butterflies born in the spring live 4 weeks but those born in the late fall live more than 6 months. It was interesting that butterflies living through the more difficult season of fall and winter with cold and less flowers could live much longer than those living through the more plentiful flower seasons. One biological reason for the longer life span for butterflies living through the colder season was slower metabolism due to lower temperature. However, I imagined that on top of this reason, there was another benefit in living together. Living in loving relationships would make any life happier even during stressful moments. The year 2020 was the year for us to appreciate the association with the community. In the difficult time of corona virus, I remember the loving care of my family that went through every hardship together, and brothers and sisters that showed love through zoom meeting, phone calls, and food left at our doors. This was were the warmth that sustained me over the winter season of corona virus.

추운 겨울을 함께 나고 있는 나비들의 지혜
코로나 바이러스로 인해 집에 갇혀 살다시피 하던 2020년 겨울에 monarch butterfly가 함께 모여 겨울을 난다고 하는 산타 크루즈의 해변 공원을 가족과 함께 방문했습니다. 오렌지 색 바탕에 검은 줄 무늬를 한 monarch butterfly 떼가 수십 혹은 수백 마리 씩 유커맆터스 나무 가지에 함께 모여 사는 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다. 이 광경을 보며 가족들과 monarch butterfly의 지혜를 이야기할 수 있었습니다. 추운 겨울을 서로의 온기에 의지하여 사는 모습이 코로나 바이스러스로 인한 어려운 시기를 보내는 우리들의 모습과 동일시 되어 나비떼들의 지혜에 더욱 감탄하였습니다. 그 곳에 쓰여있는 설명을 보니 봄에 태어난 나비들은 4 주를 살고 늦가을에 태어난 나비들은 6개월 이상을 산다고 합니다. 따뜻하고 먹을 것 많은 봄, 여름을 보내는 나비보다 춥고, 먹을 꽃도 귀해서 더 어려운 가을, 겨울을 보내는 나비가 더 오랜 수명을 사는 것이 신기하였습니다. 추운 시기에 태어난 나비들이 장수하는 이유에는 느린 생리 대사로 모든 것이 느리게 진행되어 더 오래 사는 면도 있겠지만 서로를 의지하며 함께하는 삶에 더해지는 능력도 있는 것이 아닌가 합니다. 코로나 바이러스로 인해 사람들과의 접촉을 거의 잃게 되면서 당연히 여겨왔던 이웃과의 만남들의 소중함을 더욱 느끼게 된 시기였기에 monarch butterfly 들의 함께 사는 지혜가 더욱 반가왔습니다. 코로나로 인한 어렵고 외로운 시기를 보내면서 늘 함께하여 준 가족들, zoom 화상 모임, 전화, 그리고 집 앞에서 놓고간 음식등을 통해 사랑을 보여준 형제 자매들과의 접촉과 사랑들이 monarch butterfly 떼가 함께 겨울을 나듯 제가 겨울을 나는 동안 느꼈던 온기 들이었음을 생각해 보았습니다.
