Pearl
When I was a poor international student, my wife trusted and followed me and raised two young children. I once gave a necklace with plain black pearl to my wife as a token of my appreciation. More than 30 years later, looking at this pearl necklace reminds me of a difficult but sweet time. When I looked at black pearls that I had never normally paid attention to, I was immersed in a little thought because of their amazing shape and beautiful color. There are only a few gems produced by living creatures. I remembered that pearls were created by a shellfish that swallowed something painful, which was like a piece of stone that could cause a wound, and covered a foreign substance causing pain with secretions. My wife endured the difficult life of support with the husband of an international student who could be like a piece of stone with patience and covered it with love and warmth to create a happy family. I thought that my wife’s life had the virtue and beauty of a pearl. Also, I thought of a Christian sister who has been struggling all her life due to heart disease. She is a faithful sister, living in a life that is inevitably difficult, covering physical pain with trust and faith in the Lord. I came to think that her fruits of faith in God, service and love are pearls that are being nurtured in the midst of physical difficulties. It occurred to me that perhaps these pearls would be gathered and linked together to make a pearl necklace worthy in heaven.
In the Bible, there is a parable of a pearl merchant who was looking for fine pearls and found a precious pearl and sold all that he had to buy the pearl. I wondered what this pearl meant in the Bible. Just as a pearl oyster covers and covers a piece of stone to form a pearl, this pearl probably refers to Jesus, who made the pearl of forgiveness and salvation by covering us, who are sinners like pieces of stone and thorns, with His blood and a cross. I thought that the grace of Jesus, which is incomparably more beautiful than the pearls of this earth, and the blessing of salvation are true pearls in spiritual realm. In the book of Revelation, it is said that there is a large pearl gate in heaven that we can pass through. It is surprising that the pearl that make up this pearl gate has a huge size that cannot be compared with the pearls of the world. This also made me wonder if this is possible because it is a pearl that symbolizes Jesus who covered us with the cross and blood. Because of the size of Jesus' suffering on the cross and the grace of salvation, the pearl that symbolizes it is also mysteriously large. Through meditation, I also hoped that I would grow pearls that will decorate the heavens by loving people around me and covering the thorns provided by difficult life with patience, faith and love.
Matthew 13:45-46 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

가난하던 유학생 시절 저를 믿고 따라와 어린 두 아이 기르며 고생하던 집 사람이 안스러워 평범한 흑 진주가 달린 목걸이를 선물한 적이 있습니다. 그 후 30 년이 넘은 지금, 이 진주 목걸이를 살펴 보니 어렵지만 다정했던 시절이 떠올랐습니다. 평소에는 눈 여겨 보지 않던 흑 진주를 살펴보게 되니 그 모양이 신기하고 색이 보기 좋아 약간의 생각에 잠기게 되었습니다. 보석 중에 살아 있는 생물이 만들어내는 보석이 거의 없는데 특이하게 상처를 낼 만한 돌 조각 같은 이 물질을 삼킨 조개가 그 아픔으로 인해 고통을 주는 이물질을 분비물로 덮고 덮어서 만들어 내는 것이 진주임을 생각하게 되었습니다. 마치 돌 조각 같을 수 있는 유학생 남편과 함께하는 어려운 뒷바라지의 삶을 인내로 견디어 내며 사랑과 따뜻함으로 덮어 행복한 가정을 이루어낸 집 사람의 손길이 진주의 모습을 지녔다는 생각이 들었습니다. 또한 주변에 심장의 질환으로 평생을 어려움 속에 지내는 자매님을 떠 올려 보았습니다. 어려울 수 밖에 없는 삶 속에서 육신의 고통을 주님에 대한 신뢰와 믿음으로 덮으며 사시는 모습이 아름다우신 자매님 이십니다. 하나님에 대한 믿음과, 주변 사람에 대한 섬김과 사랑의 열매가 육신의 어려움 속에서 오늘도 키워 나가고 계시는 진주라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 아마도 이러한 진주들이 모이고 연결되어 천국에서 사용할만한 진주 목걸이를 만들어 낼 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.
성경에는 진주 상인이 진주를 찾아 다니다가 좋은 진주를 발견하고 자신의 모든 소유를 다 팔아 진주를 샀다는 이야기가 있습니다. 이 진주가 뜻하는 것이 무엇인가 생각해 보았습니다. 진주 조개가 돌 조각을 덮고 덮어 진주를 이루듯, 아마도 이 진주는 돌 조각 같고 가시같은 죄인 된 우리들을, 피로 덮고, 십자가로 덮으셔서 용서와 구원의 진주를 만들어 내신 예수님을 뜻함을 묵상하게 되었습니다. 이 땅의 진주와는 감히 비교할 수 없이 아름다우신 예수님의 은혜와 구원의 축복이 참 진주 됨을 생각해 볼 수 있었습니다. 요한 계시록에 보면 천국에 사람이 지나 다닐 만한 큰 진주 문이 있다고 합니다. 이 진주 문을 이루는 진주가 세상의 진주와 비교할 수 없는 엄청난 크기를 지녔음이 신기합니다. 이 또한 우리를 십자가와 피로 덮으신 예수님을 상징하는 진주이기 때문에 가능한 것이 아닌가 생각해 보게 되었습니다. 예수님의 십자가 고통과, 구원의 은혜가 크기에 이를 상징하는 진주도 이처럼 신비하리 만큼 큰 것이 아닌가 합니다. 묵상을 통해 저 또한 주변의 사람들과 어려운 삶이 제공하는 가시들을 인내와, 믿음과, 사랑으로 덮어 천국을 장식할 진주를 키워 나가는 삶이 될 수 있기를 소망해 보게 되었습니다.
