Rivers in Bible
On a very hot summer day, when I stopped by the Colorado River in the US, I remember it was pretty cool to get close to the river even though it was a hot summer. I remember the thought of living on the banks of a river if I could choose my place of residence anywhere. Since rivers and life are closely related, I meditated on the special meanings that some rivers in the Bible symbolize.
First, I thought of the rivers Pishon, Gihon, Hiddekel, and Euphrates that flowed out of Eden and became the four rivers that watered and divided the Garden of Eden and made the earth fertile. Before the fall of man, they were the blessed rivers that gave life to Eden, but after the fall of man, they lost their life force, so I thought that they represent all rivers after the fall. Due to the fall of the world, I meditated on that these rivers are now sometimes dry and sometimes overflowing, turning them into rivers that have created the history of human civilization. It occurred to me that these rivers represent a world that we need to survive, but at the same time we have to fight for survival and safety.
Other rivers in the Bible that came to mind were the Jabbok River, which Jacob crossed, and the Jordan River, which Joshua crossed. I came to meditate on the meaning of these two rivers as an obstacle that must be crossed, which symbolizes the starting point of a bold step toward a new Eden that will be created, leaving behind the fallen Eden.
The next important river was the river that appeared in Ezekiel. This river was the Kebar River that symbolized the days of Israel's captivity, when they were abandoned by God and taken into captivity in Babylon for ignoring the covenant with the Lord and serving idols. It reminded me of a psalm sung by the river Kebar in Babylon, where Israel was taken captive across the Jordan River. I thought that this situation is a good representation of how we are, even in the present age, as prisoners of sin and unable to sing the song of true joy. It was because I saw that many modern songs consist of hopeless suffering and an invitation to depravity.
The last river to meditate on was the river flowing with the water of life that is revealed in the book of Revelation. It made me think that this river, flowing with crystal clear water, with the tree of life, and with leaves to heal the nations, promises a much better heaven than the lost Eden on earth. Eden was also a model of heaven where the Lord resides, so I thought that even if I could go back to Eden, the longing for my true hometown of heaven would still be there. As I meditate on the river of the water of life in my hometown of heaven, I also hoped that all my thirst would be quenched and all my sinful nature would disappear.
Revelation 22:1-2 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
성경 속의 강들을 묵상함
무척 더운 여름 날, 미국의 콜로라도 강을 잠시 들렀을 때에 더운 여름이었음에도 강 가까이에 이르니 꽤 시원했던 기억이 납니다. 저의 거주지를 아무 곳에나 선택할 수 있다면 강 유역에 살고 싶다는 생각이 들었던 기억이 납니다. 강과 삶이 밀접한 관계를 갖고 있기에 성경에 나타난 몇가지 강들이 상징하고 있는 특별한 의미들이 있음을 묵상해 보았습니다. 먼저 에던에서 흘러나와 에덴 동산을 적시고 갈라져 땅을 비옥케 하였던 네 근원이 된 강들인 비손, 기혼, 힛데겔, 유브라데 강들이 있음을 생각하였습니다. 인간의 타락 전에는 에덴에 생명을 주는 복된 강들이었으나 인간의 타락 이후에는 생명력을 제공할 에덴 땅을 상실하고 그 생명력을 잃어버리게 된 강들이기에 타락 이후의 모든 강들을 대표하고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 세상의 타락으로 인해 이 강들이 이제는 때로는 마르고 때로는 범람하면서 인간의 문명사를 만들어 내었던 강들로 변화 되었음을 묵상하였습니다. 이 강들이 우리의 생존을 위해 우리에게 필요하지만 동시에 생존과 안전을 위해 싸워야 하는 세상을 상징하고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 또 다른 성경의 강들 중 중요하게 떠오른 강들은 야곱이 건넜던 얍복 강과 여호수아가 건넜던 요단 강 이었습니다. 이 두 강들이 타락한 에덴을 뒤로하고 새 창조 될 새 에덴을 향한 과감한 행보의 시작 점을 상징하는 꼭 지나가야 할 장애물을 의미함을 묵상 하게 되었습니다. 그 다음으로 중요하게 생각된 강은 에스겔에 나타난 강이었습니다. 이 강은 바로 주님과의 언약을 무시하고 우상을 섬김으로 하나님에게 버림 받아 바벨론 포로되었던 이스라엘의 포로 시절을 상징하는 그발 강이었습니다. 이스라엘이 요단 강을 반대로 건너 포로로 끌려간 바벨론 그발 강가에서 노래한 시편을 떠 올리게 되었습니다. “우리가 바벨론의 여러 강변 거기에 앉아서 시온을 기억하여 울었도다. ... 우리가 이방 땅에서 어찌 여호와의 노래를 부를까 (시편 137:1-4)” 이 상황은 현 시대에서도 죄악의 포로가 되어 참 기쁨의 노래를 부르지 못하는 우리들의 모습을 잘 나타내고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 현대의 많은 노래 들이 소망 없는 고통과 타락으로의 초청으로 이루어져 있음을 보기 때문이었습니다. 마지막으로 묵상한 강은 요한 계시록에 나타난 생명수가 흐르는 강이었습니다. 수정과 같이 맑은 물이 흐르며, 생명 나무가 있고, 만국을 치료할 잎사귀들이 있는 이 강이야 말로 우리가 잃어 버렸던 지상 낙원 에덴보다 훨씬 나은 천국을 약속하고 있음을 생각하게 되었습니다. 에덴도 주님이 계신 천국의 모형이었기에 만일 제가 에덴에 다시 돌아 갈 수 있다 하더라도 참된 본향 천국에 대한 갈망은 여전할 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 저의 본향된 천국의 생명수 강을 묵상하면서 아직도 제게 채워지지 않는 갈증과 죄악된 모습들이 있지만 수정과 같이 맑게 흐르는 생명수를 마음껏 마실 그 때에는 모든 갈증이 다 해갈되고 저의 죄악된 모습들도 모두 다 사라져 버릴 것을 또한 소망해 보았습니다.
