California Super-bloom
I had a chance to visit a southern California desert to see a super-bloom a phenomenon in which a vast area is completely filled with flowers. The area was arid and barren but in about 10 year of interval the area is covered with a huge yellow flower blanket. Tourists from all over the world visited the area to see. When my wife and I arrived at the desert, the grand expanse of yellow flowers covering one end of the horizon to the other refreshed our spirits. Small hills bulging over the plain were covered with beautiful violet and white flowers and made a pleasing contrast with the yellow flower plain. After I came back from the trip, I looked into super-blooms and learned an interesting point. The super-bloom happens only after a huge amount of flower seeds accumulate over many years. When the yearly rainfall is plentiful, all the flower seeds that could not germinate without enough water finally germinate all together at the same time. I thought this phenomenon has a parallel in our lives. A big chunk of our lives is filled with harsh and dry moments comprising a drought season. In my life, moments in which the heavy burden of life weighed down upon me can be compared to a dry desert without water. However, even in the middle of the harshest dry season, there are still seeds sown onto the arid soil accumulating and waiting for the rain. Our shouts toward the God from our deepest soul, His gentle calling toward us in a whisper through His word, and tangible loving hands extended to us by loving brothers and sisters might be examples of spiritual flower seeds accumulating in our lives. When I get to the middle of another difficult dry moment, I am going to remember the sea of flowers transforming the desert into a flower garden better than any garden made by human hands. I hope to gather small seeds day by day in my life to bloom at the moment when the grace of God will pour upon us like rain. In that time, I hope that I can fill a small side corner of His flower garden with my flowers in His heavenly, majestic kingdom.

광야에 핀 꽃을 보며
집사람과 함께 시간을 내서 켈리포니아 남부 지역의 사막이 온통 꽃으로 뒤덮히는 Super-bloom 현상을 보러갈 기회가 있었습니다. 평소에는 사막으로 건조하고 척박한 땅인 곳에 10년 정도의 주기를 두고 자연이 연출하는 꽃바다가 온 사막을 덮는 자연 현상입니다. 이러한 광경을 보기위해 외국에서까지 찾아오기도한다는 특별한 광경입니다. 저희 부부가 방문한 사막 지역에서도 땅 끝에서 땅 끝까지 노란 꽃으로 뒤덮인 노란색 평야가 가슴을 확 트이게 만들어주었습니다. 노란 색으로 덮인 평야 한 가운데에 솟아오른 작은 동산들에는 보랏빛 꽃들과 흰 꽃들이 아름다운 군집을 이루며 노란 평야와 아름다운 대조를 이루고 있었습니다. 집에 돌아와 정보를 찾아보니 특이한 점은 이러한 현상이 매년 일어나는 것이 아니라 여러 해 동안 멈추었다가 강수량이 특별히 많은 해에 그 동안 비가 충분치 않아 땅속에 저장되어 왔던 씨들이 일제히 싹을 티울 때에야 비로소 일어난다고 합니다. 우리의 삶도 이러한지 모르겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 많은 우리들의 인생의 순간들이 가뭄과 같은 답답함으로 채워지고 있을때가 적지 않기 때문입니다. 내 속에서 기쁨과 감동보다는 무미 건조하며 때로는 힘겨운 삶의 무게들에 짓눌린 순간들이 비가 부족하여 말라가는 사막과 같다 하겠습니다. 하지만 메마른 사막의 한 가운데에서도 뿌려져 땅 속에서 조금씩 모여지고 있는 씨앗들이 우리에게도 있는듯합니다. 어려움 속에서 주님을 향한 우리의 가슴속으로부터의 외침, 스치듯 지나가는 듯할지라도 나를 향하신 주님의 말씀을 통한 부르심, 어려움을 같이하여준 형제자매들의 손길들과 기도들이 우리 인생속에서 쌓여가고 있는 씨앗들이기 때문입니다. 답답한 삶과 변화가 잡히지 않는 상황 속에서 사막에 핀 꽃바다의 장관을 기억해 보려고 합니다. 하루 하루마다 꽃피울 작은 씨앗들을 모아서 주님의 은혜의 큰 비가 있을 그 날에 세상을 뒤 덮을 주님의 나라 한귀퉁이에서 작은 꽃밭을 이룰 수있기를 소망해봅니다.
