Tidepool
Many years ago, I headed for a seashore to see tide pools quite early in the morning with my son. The tide pool contained many ocean life forms adapted to the tide pool, and had a diverse ecosystem than other parts of the ocean. Because the tidepool was only accessible when the tide was quite low, we checked for a day with low tide on the internet and planned the trip accordingly. In the tidepool, we could see sea stars, several kinds of sea crabs and sea anemones. We poked sea anemones here and there with our fingers and laughed at their reactions. On top of the fun, there was a lesson I learned through the trip. I thought about how the special environmental condition of the tidepool could support more diverse life forms than the rest of the ocean. The tidepool was a harsh and difficult environment in which to live. When the water level was higher, large waves bombarded the tidepool with strong force and, when the water level was lower, the tidepool was exposed to the strong sun light without cover. Organisms in the tidepool had to overcome these stresses. Once they could endure the hardship, these environmental conditions became beneficial and even became the reason they flourished. The strong waves agitated the sand at the bottom of the tidepool bringing nutrients to the tidepool dwellers. Also, the harsh, strong sunlight made photosynthesizing phyto-planktons flourish, which in turn become food essential for animals in the tidepool. I reflected that our life had a similar aspect. We bear good fruits of the holy spirit by going through a difficult time rather than a time of peace and prosperity. In spite of my tendency to prefer an easy, prosperous life, I wished to learn a lesson from the tidepool and welcome the strong wave of the hardship allowed by God to lead me into a more blessed, holier life.

썰물과 밀물이 오가는 시련 속에서 일어나는 생명력
오래전 대학에 다니던 아들과 함께 tidepool (조수 웅덩이)을 보기 위해 아침 일찍 바닷가로 향한 적이 있습니다. Tidepool 이 흥미로운 이유는 다른 곳에서는 서식하지 않는 특별한 종류의 해양 생물체들이 다수 있어 다른 바다 생태계보다 다양한 생물체들을 볼 수 있기 때문입니다. Tidepool 은 썰물이 커서 물이 많이 빠진 때에만 볼 수 있기에 인터넷에서 간만의 차이가 큰 날을 확인하고 바닷가를 방문했습니다. Tidepool 에서 평소에 보지 못한 불가사리, 게 종류들, 그리고 말미잘들을 볼 수 있었습니다. 이 곳 저 곳 말미잘 들을 손가락으로 장난스럽게 찔러보며 아들과 유쾌한 시간을 보냈던 기억이 납니다. 하지만 한가지 생각해야할 교훈이 있어 나누려고 합니다. Tidepool 만이 지니고 있는 특별한 환경 조건이 어떻게 다른 해양 생태계보다 다양하고 생산적인 생명력을 부여하는지 생각해 보려는 것입니다. 암반이 있고 썰물과 밀물이 오가는 tidepool 의 환경은 적응하기에 쉽지 않은 환경입니다. 물이 차있을 때에는 거센 물결로 인한 큰 파도가 그대로 밀려 들고 물이 밀려 나가면 강한 햇빛이 내려쪼이기에 생존하기에 어려운 환경이라 할 것입니다. 그러기에 그 곳에 사는 생물들은 간만의 차이에서 오는 환경의 변화들을 이겨내며 살아야하는 부담을 지니고 있습니다. 이러한 어려움들이 오히려 이 곳의 생물들에게 풍성한 생명력을 제공하는 조건 들임을 생각해봅니다. 고통스럽지만 파도가 치기에 물이 깊은 바닥에 깔린 흙들을 퍼 올릴 수 있고 이 퍼 올려진 흙속의 양분들이 tidepool생물들에게 전해질 수 있는 것입니다. 또한 고통스럽게 내려 쪼이는 햇빛으로 인해 광합성을 하는 식물 플랑크톤과 수초들의 발육이 왕성하여져서 tidepool 에 사는 생물들의 충분한 먹이가 되고 있습니다. 우리의 삶도 이러한 면이 있는듯 합니다. 우리의 인생의 성장과 성령의 열매들의 대부분이 평온하고 풍요한 시절이 아니라 어려운 시련의 시기에 얻어지는 것들이 아닌가 합니다. 평온하고 안락한 삶을 늘 선호하는 저이기에 때로 주님이 허락하신 파도와 같은 시험들이 다가올 때에 더욱 풍성한 삶을 이룰 축복의 순간들이 시련이라는 다른 이름으로 다가오고 있음을 아는 지혜를 tidepool 을 통해 더욱 배워야 하겠습니다.
