Water Lily
I can still remember a lotus pond in our village where I spent my youth. The lotus pond gave precious comfort to the people who were living in our illegally built, squalid village. The pink flower of the lotus was so pretty that the memory of the beauty of the lotus was imprinted in my young mind. However, after I moved to California to study, I had only a couple of chances to see lotus flowers. But on a hot summer day, I had a chance to visit a water lily pond with pink and white lily flowers and watch small water animals, including small newts busily mating. While watching these, I thought that there were certain traits of the water lily that remind me of Jesus.
First, I thought about the water lily’s seed falling into the unclean water. This reminded me of the coming of Jesus as a baby, humbling Himself into this sinful world.
Second, I thought about the water lily’s cleansing of the polluted water. This reminded me that Jesus had cleansed us by curing our diseases and expelling unclean spirits during his ministry.
Third, I thought about the shadow formed by water lily’s broad leaves, protecting water animals from harsh sunlight and providing a shelter to them. This reminded me of Jesus who called the people out form the bondage of sinful lives, freed them from the yoke of sinful lives, and gave them rest.
Fourth, I thought about lily flowers protruding into the air above the water. This reminded me of the cross protruding into the heaven above the earth.
Last, I thought about the seeds made out of wilting flowers. This reminded me of the grace of Jesus who rose from death, gave us new seeds of life, and replanted us into Heaven.
I determined to meditate a little more about Jesus and thank Him a little more whenever I saw the lily flower and its seeds. I would go to the lily pond to watch the blooming lily this year too.
John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
수련
서울 변두리의 철거 촌에서 자라던 유년시절, 가난하고 어려웠던 사람들에게 위로가 되던 동네 저수지의 연꽃 밭이 아른하게 기억납니다. 저수지를 가득 채운 분홍빛 연꽃들이 탐스러우면서도 화사하게 좋았기에 평생 연꽃을 좋아하게 된 것 같습니다. 하지만 미국 켈리포니아로 유학 온 후에는 연꽃을 본 것이 손꼽아 볼 정도로 드물어 아쉬운 마음이 들기도 합니다. 제가 사는 지역이 물이 귀한 지역이라 저수지가 전혀 없기 때문입니다. 간혹 정원에 드물게 연못이 있어도 잎이 물 위로 올라오는 연꽃 보다는 잎이 물 위에 뜨는 수련을 많이 키우는 듯합니다. 어느 더운 여름난 연꽃 대신 수련꽃이 피는 연못가 그늘에 앉아 하얀 수련꽃과 그 속에서 짝짓기가 한창이던 작고 귀여운 도롱용을 비롯한 여러 수생생물들을 바라볼 기회가 있었습니다. 세상 만물이 다 예수님을 드러낼 수 있겠지만 연꽃과 수련을 특별히 좋아하는 저였기에 수련 속에 예수님을 연상케 하는 몇가지 면들이 있음을 묵상해 보게 되었습니다.
먼저 수련의 씨앗이 흐린 물에 떨어짐을 생각해 보았습니다. 이는 자신의 몸을 낮추셔서 죄악된 세상에 수련의 씨가 뿌려지듯 아기로 오신 예수님을 생각나게 하였습니다.
두 번 째로 수련이 흐려진 물을 정화하는 능력이 있음을 생각하게 되었습니다. 예수님께서 우리들의 육체의 병든 몸을 치유하시며 더러운 영들을 제하심으로 우리의 영들을 맑게 정화시키신 사역들과 수련의 물을 정화 시키는 능력사이에 유사함이 있음을 생각해 보았습니다.
세 번 째로 수련이 잎으로 그늘을 만들어 여러 종류의 수생 생물들을 햇빛으로 부터 가려주며 쉴 곳을 제공하는 것과 예수님의 사역이 비슷한 점이 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 세상의 무겁고 힘든 짐진자 들을 부르셔서 그들의 멍에로부터 자유케 하셔서 영과 혼을 쉬게하시는 주님의 사역과 수련 잎이 만들어 주는 그늘이 유사함을 생각하였습니다.
네 번 째로 청초한 잎들 사이로, 솟아 오른 수련의 분홍빛 꽃이 십자가를 연상시켰습니다. 예수님이 십자가에서 흘리신 붉은 피와 땅 위로 솟아 오른 주님의 십자가가 물 위로 솟아오른 분홍빛 수련 꽃과 유사함을 생각 하였습니다.
마지막으로 수련 꽃이 죽어 열린 씨앗들이 부활하여 열매 맺으신 예수님과 유사한 면이 있음을 생각해 보았습니다. 죽음을 이기고 부활하셔서 믿는 모든 자에게 생명의 새로운 씨앗을 주시고, 천국이라는 은혜의 땅에 이종케 하시는 주님의 은혜가 수련이 맺는 씨와 유사하다는 생각이 들었기 때문입니다.
수련 꽃이 피고 그 씨앗들이 맺힘을 볼 때마다 예수님을 조금은 더 묵상하며 조금은 더 감사할 것을 다짐해 봅니다. 올 해에도 피어 오르는 수련 꽃을 보러 가야겠습니다.
